The variable speed option actually helps you to either speed up or slow down the motion of the sanding pad, depending on the type of material you are sanding and the type of finish you want to achieve.

It is very important because it helps you dictate the pace at which you want to sand and the amount of material you wish to remove.

If you need to remove a lot of material from the surface, then you increase the speed. On the other hand, if only light surface sanding is required, like when you want to refinish your wooden floor or furniture, then you can reduce the speed to match the amount of material you wish to remove.
